If the particles are weak and break down during testing (such as weathered sandstone or crushed concrete), then fresh material must be used for each specimen, requiring around 90kg for a set of 3 specimens. If material is available in limited quantities but can be re-used without degradation for subsequent specimens, then 40 kg will be sufficient for a set of 3 but will significantly increase turnaround times due to drying/wetting times between specimens.

These tests are usually performed in-situ (on trial pit walls etc.) to get a quick indication of the shear strength. Geolabs provides only laboratory based testing and so cannot perform these tests in-situ. The laboratory vane test is a more controlled version of the test more suited to undisturbed samples in the laboratory. If required we can perform hand vane tests in the laboratory (with the same material requirements as the laboratory vane) but this is not a BS1377 test.
