- 4 kg of < 20 mm material for 100 mm specimen.

Notes
Caution: With fine-grained low permeability materials this test can have a long duration (eg. 1-2 weeks per stage) and correspondingly high charges due to the extra over days incurred. In this case, if there is nothing larger than fine gravel, a set of three 38mm diameter samples may work out less expensive than a multistage 100mm diameter specimen and will have a much quicker turnaround (typically within 2 weeks). Multistage tests on low permeability materials are particularly susceptible to long durations as each successive stage is slowed by the previous consolidation stage reducing the material’s permeability.
